How to Boot Up in Safe Mode
When your computer is giving you issues, it may sometimes require that you start windows in safe mode so you or a computer repair expert is able to resolve the situation. Lets first discuss what safe mode is and why it is used. Safe mode boot is when your computer starts with the just the mandatory required items to run the windows operating system and nothing else. A lot of times doing this will disable a virus so a computer repair expert can access the PC and perform a virus removal. There are also various choices to start up safe mode in.
How to Start Up Safe Mode
The easiest way to start safe mode is to do the following:
- Shut the computer down to a completely off state.
- Find the “F8″ key on your keyboard and have your finger on it ready to press
- Turn on the computer and begin pressing the “F8″ key repeatively
- You will come to a “Safe Mode” boot screen.
Safe Mode Boot Options
You will have a number of options to boot your computer to now, lets review the options and what each one does:
Safe Mode
Safe mode option will boot your computer up directly with the core essential files to run windows, however as a disadvantage it will not detect USB drives or internet connections.
Safe Mode with Networking
Safe mode with networking is the more widely used safe mode option. This loads up windows core files with internet drivers so that you are able to connect to the internet to retrieve files to repair your PC. This setting also allows the remote experts to access your PC to remove the virus and repair the PC.
Safe Mode with Command Prompt
This setting loads the core essential files to run a MS-DOS command prompt. This is for advance users who know how to navigate windows through command prompt to repair. This is not suggest for basic users and does not allow the experts to remotely access your PC.
Last Known Good Configuration
This setting is a good thing to try if your PC is acting up but typically does not remove viruses. What this boot does is look for the last time that Windows successfully booted up and uses those settings to start the operating system. Typically if malware has already installed in your system, this will not remove it due to the severity of malware in this day in age.
Start Windows Normally
This option will exit safe mode and start windows normally.
Navigating in Safe Mode
When your windows login screen loads up you might notice that the screen looks extremely large. This is because it is in a 800×600 resolution since windows only uses the core files to start the operating system. You will also see the addition of a secret administrator account. This account has full administration abilities and is typically used by system administrators to access and make changes to the system. Typically you can just log in under your existing account. You will now have the ability to access all windows default features.
Will Safe Mode Remove Viruses?
The short answer is no, safe mode will not remove viruses, but it will put your system in a diagnostic mode to help assist in removing the viruses. It is important to mention that most viruses these days embed in system files and if you are not familiar with system files and the windows structure that you should leave the virus removal to a trained technician.
