I did get rid of it after a little tweaking. The scareware was
called XP Security 2012. Either that or a phony rendition of a
of the real thing. Not sure.

That's just not true, because we can do the same things remotely that you can do on site. As long as the issue is software driven, which 90% are, you can repair them remotely, it just depends on the quality and knowledge of the tech and the tools he has to fix the issue. Most remote repair competitors are incompetent and don't know what there truly doing even if they were physically in front of the computer.

Not true, we are able to remove viruses on site techs can't do remotely, it all depends upon the technology you have to deal with it. We haven't gotten very good at it, we can remove root kits and boot sector viruses remotely and do so on a daily basis.

An antivirus program called Xp Security 2012 installed
itself through auto updates. Phony scareware that prevented
you from going on line and blocking any attempt to remove it.
Not picked up by MS Security essentials. It attempts to
blackmail you into buying it. Pops up even in safe mode.

Trouble is that remote repairs can only handle light work. To truly root out real problems you need hands on repair and the ability to access safe mode and or use utilities booted from a USB stick or CD disc...

Hi Kyle,

I found your interesting blog while I was browsing. Yeah, I agree with you 100% about the updates. It's a must that we keep the pieces of software updated for stronger security. I've posted some similar articles which you might be interested. You'll find my blog at http://ed-allaboutcomputer.blogspot.com

This is a tough one to remove! There are many variants on it too just like other rogue antivirus software.

Hey Kyle - I definitely agree with all of this. Even though people hate that update icon popping up and asking them to install updates, it's a necessary interruption!
