Support Nerds was recently interviewed on WBKO about the issues faced by many small businesses in light of the McAfee Bug. Kyle Springer explained how many small businesses across the nation are left dealing with the McAfee bug on their own.

View the Story on WBKO’s website: http://www.wbko.com/home/headlines/91877854.html

or Read Below:

Your anti-virus software may have glitched your computer and you may not even know it.

On Wednesday, a faulty program by the McAfee software caused PC problems all across the country, including Kentucky.

But a least one computer expert says for some, the problem may last a few more days.

“You would just be sitting here and your internet would disappear, your PC would slow down and you wouldn’t know why,” explained Kyle Springer, CEO for Support Nerds, of Bowling Green.

It’s a problem that’s kept Springer busy since Wednesday.

“It’s just been ramping up since,” he said. “It will probably go through the weekend because some people probably still don’t know what the problem is with their PC.”

Springer is the head of a Bowling Green company called Support Nerds.

He says his company has taken 30 to 40 calls a day regarding a glitch stemming from the anti-virus software, McAfee.

“Somewhere in their programming they had messed up and completed what’s called a ‘false positive,’ where it actually deleted a Windows file and disables your internet,” he said.

The glitch struck government offices, schools and even some hospitals across the country.

And while according to McAfee, the problem only affected corporate customers, Springer says it’s been the small businesses that continue to suffer.

“They don’t have an IT department, so when they have these issues it’s just as if they’re at home,” he said. “They don’t have an IT person to go to and they don’t know what the problem is, so business is down and they’re losing money.”

Other computer repair shops we spoke to say they haven’t seen many problems from the glitch.

They add that they do tell their customers just to avoid McAfee software all together because of problems.

McAfee has posted fixes to the problem on its website.

Lets first break down a list and definition of the different kinds of infections your PC can get. Here is a list of the most common from our buddies at Malwarebytes:

Adware
Adware (or spyware) is a small program that is designed to show advertisements (in various form and degrees of intrusiveness) on your computer. It often reports personal information back to its owners. As a result your sense of privacy can be violated.

Backdoor
A backdoor is a small malicious program that is used to gain access to a computer by bypassing the computer access security mechanisms. It gives the attacker almost unlimited rights. While it can be used to spy on a user, it is mainly used to install other malware on the system.

Heuristic
A technique designed to detect malware by empirical means but without having the specific data.

Malware
A generic name for all types of malicious programs: adware, backdoors, rogues, trojans, viruses and worms.

Rogue
A rogue program is a malicious program that is disguised, for instance, as trustworthy anti-spyware programs or registry cleaners. But these programs are only put on the market to scare you into buying these programs because they make exaggerated claims about the safety of your computer or, worse still, give erroneous scan results or put their own malware in your system.

Trojan
A trojan (or Trojan horse) is a small malicious program that pretends to have a particular function, but that only shows its real purpose after execution and that purpose is often destructive. Trojans cannot multiply themselves, which differentiates them from viruses and worms.

Virus
A virus is a small malicious program that multiplies and is capable to attach itself to other programs after being executed. It then causes an infection and causes various degrees of damage to your computer.

Worm
A worm is often characterized as a malicious application that will use a host machine to infect other machines. Therefore worms can create enormous damage on networks with multiple computers.

With all the different forms of infections and choices of Anti-Virus/Malware protection, finding the right one for you can be a difficult decision. In our testing at Support Nerds we have found MalwareBytes to be the least intrusive yet best active protector against Malware and Viruses. That is why we provide it to all of our PC Total Care Customers free of charge. While this software is great against blocking those forms of infections, for people looking to get a free option for firewall, we suggest the Free Zone Alarm Firewall. It will take a little setup and a little training of the program, but after a week, it should be up and running smoothly.
